Second from the left is my son Brian. This picture was taken when he was in training with other doctors at Fort Sam Houston, Texas

This is Brian saying goodbye to his oldest daughter Paige on the day of his departure. I think this picture expresses quite well what our family was feeling on that sad day.

This is Brian and his son Jarod as they are heading for the security gate at SeaTac Airport.

The night before my son's departure we all gathered around my grandson Jarod's bed to have prayer. This has been our custom through the years, first with my grandaughters and then with my grandson Jarod. I will never forget what my grandson said to his father. Looking up to him he said very earnestly, "Daddy why do you have to go." He just broke our hearts. I don't think anyone was able to give him an answer at that time.

These are some views of the trusty C-17 Globemaster that transported Brian from Rhein, Germany to Bagram, Afghanistan.
